  2. The two best YA books I read this summer (besides the Hunger Games trilogy that I read with my oldest son) were Maze Runner and Unwind. Both were quick, engaging reads that captured the reader's interest from the first page. If you like video games, Maze Runner will be up your alley because the "creepers" and maze the characters must escape mirror the kinds of games available on XBox, etc. Unwind explores human potential through the teenage character and allows readers to contemplate the lengths to which humanity will go to control and manipulate others as well as the value of freedom and human rights. The Help was another good read. It reminded me that we may consider through fictional works the emotional legacy of our own nation's inequitable history--rather like a book quite awhile ago--One Thousand White Women-- or Sherman Alexie's more recent humourous depiction of Native American's struggle for existence and meaning in a "white world" --The Absolutely True Narrative of a Part-Time Indian.
